Hi my name is “Johnny” (real name protected because of embarrassment) and this is my story
About 14 months ago, I finally decided on a home business to get started with. I had been looking for months, actually tried a few MLM’s starter kits, yet I could not ignore the allure of making $1,000 plus per sale.
After all, I had been successful in corporate sales for a long time. And then suddenly, my company had been sold, and I could see the writing on the wall. I also was tired of the hassle of going to work every day and had bought in, hook, line, and sinker into the idea that I could live the lifestyle of a millionaire, while only working 20 hours per week with no prior experience.
And the best part … the guy I just FedExed my $1,495 check to, said there was tons of training, and that he would teach me everything I needed to know. My sponsor said just “plug in” to the “System”, and you will get exactly what you want.
That’s when I discovered that the “System” was going to cost me an extra $80 a month, and that I would have to pay for the first 90 days UP FRONT. That was my first experience of “Gotcha”, it wouldn’t be my last.
About a week later, my home study course arrived in a box. Much to my dismay it contained only a couple of CD’s and a DVD with a “journal” all wrapped in a pretty box but my mind was still set. I had already ordered $500 in leads … good leads … or so said the people on the conference calls and my sponsor.
I was disappointed in my product but was told, there was a lot of substance to it, I just needed to listen and do the 90 day exercises.
Then the surprise call came … I was suddenly … exactly 11 days after purchasing the $1,500 course … on the phone with 2 people … my sponsor and another “leader”. In the next 10 minutes they proceeded to tell me that the only way to make the kind of money I wanted to make was to purchase the very expensive “Personal Development” seminars; $8,000 for the next product, and almost $14,000 for the other.
These guys were good too … very skilled at bully marketing, and before I knew it … I was Fed-Exing a $22,000 check … all before any of my leads arrived.
And just like that, 2 weeks into my business, I was in deep, $24,000 deep. Again I was re-assured that there would be support and training and because I “stepped up”, I would get extra support.
For the next 5 weeks, I followed the plan, bought leads, called them and tried to get them to listen in to the conference or pitch calls. I was getting frustrated because I was spending $500+ per week, and still no money coming in. I also noticed that my sponsor was getting harder and harder to get in touch with.
This scenario continued until I had spent over $50,000 on leads, event tickets, marketing training weekends and buying all of the materials and systems the leaders told me to. Still I had Zip, ZERO, NADA to show for it.
I got frustrated many times, and was told I simply needed more personal development, and that I should attend the next Personal Development event; another $5K in the hole, and still nothing.
Finally, credit cards maxed out, behind on my mortgage, hardly even able to buy food; I quit the “business”. I had been scammed out of almost $70,000 when all was said and done.
You see, I believed what these skilled con men had told me, I believed it would be simple, I believed that I only had to work 20 hours a week. I bought in to the BS, and now I am back at a JOB.
I learned how hard it is to sell a money game disguised with a product. A product that no one cares about, and would not spend that kind of money to have; and, being a person of integrity, would not tell the lies I had been trained to tell.
It’s too bad for me that Pinnacle Evolution wasn’t around back then, because my outcome would have been much different. I am now enrolled in the Entrepreneur Development Program, learning what I should have and making a comeback with the real support I am getting. I know that I will not have to work the JOB for much longer and I also know now how dangerous it is out there. Yes, my name is “Johnny” and I made some huge mistakes. I hope my story will ensure others don’t meet the same fate.
